A tiny drop of honeydew
This mealybug is on a Golden Cane Palm in my garden. It's a type of sap-sucking insect. A by-product of it's sap-sucking activity is honeydew, a sugar-rich sticky liquid.
In literature, honeydew is mentioned by Samuel Coleridge in his poem Kubla Khan:
And all who heard should see them there,
And all should cry, Beware! Beware!
His flashing eyes, his floating hair!
Weave a circle round him thrice,
And close your eyes with holy dread,
For he on honey-dew hath fed,
And drunk the milk of Paradise.
