Dunkeld Bridge over the River Tay

On the north bank of the Tay sits Dunkeld village and opposite lies Birnam village where the trains to Inverness and Aberdeen stop. Thomas Telford, the famous Scottish civil engineer who was given the humourous nickname 'The Colossus of Roads', designed the bridge which opened in 1809.

It was a toll bridge for 70 years which led to riots, and seemingly the toll gates were thrown into the river several times. Indeed the Royal Highlanders were dispatched to Dunkeld to keep the peace at one point! Hard to imagine such shenanigans in this tranquil village. Dunkeld is now bypassed by the A9 north to Pitlochry and beyond, with a special lane to allow a safe right turn on to the narrow road leading directly to the bridge and Dunkeld.

The only sign of the snow in today's Blip is the smattering on the hills in the distance. However there were light blizzards all day but when the sun came out the snow just disappeared.
