2021 Tuesday — Hwy. #1 Today
“Road Trip” more often than not equates “yes” thoughts for Mr. Fun & me. This morning we headed north on California’s Highway #1 with the destination of lunch at Nepenthe in Big Sur and a stroll thru their “Phoenix” gift shop; I wanted a book that isn’t in our library system and a few more of my favorite pencils.
We pedaled this highway on a tandem bicycle from San Francisco to Corona two times years ago, so fond memories are attached to these miles. We headed-out under an overcast sky, without fog. We’ve seen much clearer days in Big Sur, but moisture in the air is a norm at the coast.
We were absolutely surprised at the lack of traffic, especially on our return south in the afternoon. Highway construction crews stopped us a few times along the way.
Once we were seated for lunch, we both ordered “The Famous Ambrosia Burger” on whole wheat. We learned the young couple next to us is here from Rochester, NY. They landed in San Francisco this past Sunday morning to go on a road trip south on California’s coast to San Diego, with a return flight to NY this coming Sunday.
They remarked that their day in San Francisco was wonderful. The guy said he’s never seen anything like our coastline. It’s his first visit to our state. We commended them on their choice of vacations, and then Mr. Fun began a litany of history and geography; a mini-travelogue for them. They both commented on the friendliness of Californians. Visiting with them enhanced our day.
We asked our waitress about the Lucia Restaurant (15 miles south). A demolition crew was tearing apart the building as we drove past. “Fire this past July,” she told us, “but the new building is scheduled to be opened in spring.” Wow!
We exited the restaurant, took the pups out of the car for a short walk thru the shade of the parking lot, and started south.
We drove down to the water at Mill Creek and again at Willow Creek Day-Use Parks. We also stopped to visit the gift shops at TreeBones, at Gorda, Ragged Point, and again in Cambria because Mr. Fun wants to purchase a hooded, zip-up sweatshirt (he didn’t find one).
And then we were home, I baked a homemade caramel apple pie. What a day!
Rosie (& Mr. Fun), aka Carol
and Chloe & Mitzi too!
