Under the Mersey
The first electric train was presented at the Berlin Industrial Exposition by Werner von Siemens in 1879.
Volk’s Electric Railway in Brighton opened in 1883.
Meanwhile The oldest underground outside of London was operating steam locomotives through its tunnel under the Mersey between Liverpool and the Wirral peninsula. Electric trains first ran the route in 1903. This fine old station at Hamilton Square in Birkenhead was where I started my journey this morning!
Back in Jersey now and quite exhausted!
