German inventor Karl von Drais is credited with developing the first bicycle in 1817. The frame was a wooden beam, and it had no pedals. They called it the "swiftwalker" or "running machine"; this I gathered from Wikipedia and Exploratorium. John was a willing helper for the blip, by doing circles in the yard in a grand manner.
