Stourhead house and gardens
Monday
This morning we left my sister Janet’s and headed down to Dorset for five nights, using Dorchester as a base. We stopped on the way to visit Stourhead house and gardens. The Palladian villa of Stourhead was built in 1721-4 by Colen Campbell for Henry Hoare, a London banker. Henry Hoare II, together with his architect Henry Flitcroft, was responsible for Stourhead’s spectacular garden. In 1792 two pavilions were added to Campbell’s original house, one for the picture collection and the other for the library. As you can see in my collage, the leaves are beginning to turn, and the estate was in the process of decorating for the season, as in the picturesque Gothic cottage, shown in the top two right scenes.
