Mappa Mundi

We are home now. We came through Hereford and went to the Cathedral to see the Mappa Mundi, a fourteenth century map of the World as it was then thought to be by its creator. It has Jerusalem at its centre and the east, where the sun rises , is at the top of the map with Europe to the left and the Middle East and Africa are  in there somewhere.
A Canadian visitor there saw that his country wasn't even founded when the map was drawn.  It is drawn on a large piece of vellum, or calfskin.
I will try to add an extra of the English translation of the map as I realise it won’t look anything in this photo. It is priceless and beautiful and I'm glad we've seen it at last.

The first extra is the Chained library in the same part of the Cathedral . A chained library is where valuable books were chained to the shelves with long chains to allow them to be taken down and read but prevent them being stolen, a practice used from the Middle Ages.
The second extra shows the beautiful stained glass window at the SAS commemorative window in the main part of the cathedral.
