Someone's been busy.

I suspect it was a  Pileated Woodpecker.  They often work on one spot of a tree over time.  This hole looks pretty fresh.  I love how a leaf stuck to one side of it, a festive calling card.  The Pileated Woodpecker is our largest species of woodpecker with a 30 inch wingspan.  Another summer-like day today.  What a gift.  If you would like to see the "Woody" in action, here's a link.
