Fox Moth

Hopefully, the last day of paid fieldwork for me. A surprising number of flowers were still in bloom including both Common and Hybrid Evening-primrose and several species of mullein.

Pete spotted this large hairy Fox Moth caterpillar trundling across the ground, presumably off to find a suitable hibernation site. The large, hairy larvae can be seen from July to April on heathland, downland and coastal grassland - this particular brownfield site has many characteristics of a coastal site, so the species is not an entirely surprising find, but definitely a very local species in the fens!

In the evening We had our first trip to the theatre for nearly two years, to see the Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain. Great musicianship combined with a sense of humour made it a very enjoyable and memorable occasion - the audience showed their appreciation with a standing ovation.
