Tongland Abbey Dig

Today's the day ........................... to wind up

It was the last proper working day of the Tongland Abbey Archaeological Dig today - moved forward a day because of a poor weather forecast for tomorrow.

So it was a case of tying up as many loose ends as possible and lots of measuring, recording and picture-taking so that a coherent report can be written of this year's work.  The atmosphere was a bit subdued today, I have to say, because there is a very real possibility that this will be the last time that a dig will take place here - at least for the foreseeable future.  The site is in the garden of a large house which has recently changed hands.  And while the new owners have been very understanding and willing for the dig to go ahead this year, they are keen gardeners and would like very much to get on with their own plans for the garden of their house!

Ah well, we shall see what happens.  It has been such an enjoyable experience for me and I have learned so much - and that will always remain ....................
