Bronze Age barge comes home
This is the Brigg barge, found preserved in clay next to the river in the 1880s, reburied and finallt excavated in the 60s/70s(?) .... Can't remember quite when. Anyway it's been residing in the Maritime Museum and has finally been brought back home to rest; unveiled just this week. Originally they thought it was Viking, but tests showed it to be 3000 years old. They believe it was used to ferry people and livestock across the Humber.
I love looking at this kind of thing, and find the well preserved craftsmanship truly amazing. 3000 years. A number difficult to comprehend.
So here it sits, preserved in wax on its high tech earthquake proof plinth. Wouldn't it be great just to bring the people who used it back to the future?
