Talking Turkey
Males are called toms. Females are hens. Juveniles are jennies.
Hens are roughly half the size of toms.
Toms have large fanning tails and iridescent plumage. Hens have dull plumage and markings.
Wattle: the skin hanging from their necks. It turns red when they're attracted. It can release excess heat. It turns blue when a turkey is frightened. It turns pale, almost white when a turkey is ill.
Snood: the flesh that grows down a bird's forehead; it can be short or long, stick up or extend long past the nose.
Caruncles: the other bumps on the head and neck
Curiosity about the wattle started my research.
We're approaching peak color and still have daytime temperatures in the 50s with no frost yet.
Thanks to our host Cailleach for keeping Wednesdays wild. Gobble! Gobble!
PS The slowly dying computer is getting very slow so my comments will be severely curtailed for the foreseeable future.
