Washed out

We walked down to check out the damage to our only road out. It was incredible to see.  We'd seen photos and videos of damage around the island from yesterday, and one of the videos was of this section of the road with a huge waterfall cascading down the hill to the left. The water has gone down significantly and apparently an engineer will be brought in to assess damage and identify what needs to be done for repairs to begin. The latest news we have is that an excavator will be cutting through the road, backfilling the site with heavy rock and gravel to an emergency standard so that emergency vehicles can cross if necessary. The road will remain closed until further notice. There was tape blocking off the road but the guy in the photo surveyed the damage and decided to have a friend lift the tape enough so he could drive through. Another woman saw him go and decided that she would just untie one end of the tape, put it on the ground, and drive through too. There was a Washout sign and tape at the top of the hill, not sure how they moved it. Idiots! Plenty of cars parked on both sides of the washout by people who made the right choice and didn't drive through.
Extras: a view from the other side of the water; another washout from up the road, closer to us; the side of the road there where the bank has been dangerously eroded
We met a few neighbours out walking too. One told us that a guy had brought his backhoe to the site of the 2nd extra and dug out rocks and debris from the ditch. Lucky he did, or the entire road could have been washed out there. A young woman I'd never seen before said she was walking down to catch the bus to town and asked if we needed anything. How kind was that!
