A great day for white supremacy
Today a judge ruled that it's perfectly OK for a white teenager to take an automatic weapon to a protest for Black Lives and kill some of the white protesters. The teenager's lawyers were able to prove in a court of law that he acted in self-defense, so it's OK. Fascists and white supremacists all over this country are celebrating.
Tonight, the streets of many American cities, including Portland, will be filled with people who are outraged about that verdict, and there may also be some among them who are celebrating that verdict. The streets, safe this afternoon when I made this photograph, will be filled with something resembling civil war.
Imani Perry, a Professor of African-American Studies at Princeton, tweeted today: "This case is a reminder that throughout US history white people, who reject white supremacist thinking, have been subject to white supremacist violence."
Derecka Purnell, author of Becoming Abolitionists, tweeted, "So if you are angry, surprised, indifferent, or confused, I hope that you join or continue to build organizations that are committed to abolishing the system that we have, committed to dismantling white supremacy, and building the world that we deserve."
I hope all the antifascists who fill the streets tonight will be able to protect each other as we renew our commitment to abolishing the system that we have.
