Sarah was running the Durisdeer hills today so I went along with her and walked the Well path, returning along the old Roman road. It's many years since I walked this way and until today I had never visited the Roman Fortlet, which is apparently one of the best-preserved of its kind. This is also part of the old pilgrimage route from Edinburgh to Whithorn Priory.
Today there were no Romans or pilgrims on the path, nor any walkers, farmers or stalkers. Sarah and I had the hills to ourselves. This tin hut is at the top of the pass and has been the site of picnics for us on walks in times past.
While waiting for Sarah back at the village, I looked around the churchyard (see extra) and the war memorial. A shocking 33 men from this tiny parish were killed in WW1.
The weather did get better and there has even been some sunshine this afternoon, so its time to go outside for a wee while and make the most of what remains of the winter daylight.
