Today
On this day in 1990, Graham Fagg and Phillippe Cozette shook hands through a small hole cut into the rock separating the English and French sides of the service tunnel of the Transmanche Link; the Eurotunnel. I remember watching the ceremony, the first time that there was a land-crossing between the island of Britain and mainland Europe in 8000 years.
The tunnel was officially opened by the Queen in May 1994 and this bottle commemorates that event. The tunnel is "local", about 35 miles from here.
