The Surrey Scholar

This statue at the foot of Guildford High Street is titled The Surrey Scholar. It is by Alan Sly and was commissioned by the University of Surrey, whose campus is close to Guildford Cathedral, to mark the millennium. The inscription states that it celebrates Guildford as a place of culture and scholarship. It was unveiled in May 2002 and is now as familiar a symbol of Guildford as the grand clock projecting over the cobblestones of the High Street.
