Another wonderful walk
It was snowing when we woke and friend Ruth decided the forecast for later was too bad to risk the drive to meet us at Dunwich Heath for a 5 mile walk. However Dennis came and though it was quite chilly when we set off along the beach towards Sizewell nuclear power station, the expected showers did not appear and we had a gorgeous morning out.
I missed Ruth’s company as I knew Mr C and Dennis would have their own catching up to do. They are like a couple of old codgers. Well I suppose that’s what they actually are. But I wish they could walk AND talk.
We headed inland past Minsmere bird reserve and stopped at the Eels Foot pub. Dennis had not thought to bring any food so we went in. Luckily it was quiet so we enjoyed s half of Adnams while Dennis tucked in to ham, eggs and chips.
The next part of the walk took us through pretty woods where trees still had the last of autumn colours hanging on. Then it was a really nice open stretch across the heath back to the cars. We said farewell to Dennis who was quite weary as he’s not walking much these days.
As it was still early we went up the road to Dunwich where we had our picnic. Dunwich is famous for being one of the towns which the encroaching sea has claimed - the story goes that you can sometimes hear the church bells from their watery grave. The walk we used to take through scrubby bushes along the cliff top also no longer exists, having also succumbed to the waves.
On our return we made a quick visit to the Adnam shop to buy beers for Christmas presents. They now, like everywhere else, make gin. I asked if I could taste a few before buying. It took quite a few tastes before I decided!
