The Egyptian Well at Hartwell
Went to Haddenham today to look at a new lawnmower at Browns. On the way home decided to try to find this little known landmark located at Lower Hartwell.
Legend has it that Julius Caesar was riding by on his horse when he saw a large deer or hart drinking from the spring or well. From then on the area was known as HART-WELL.
The water supposedly has healing properties and a victorian whose name I can't remember decided to build a suedo Egyptian pylon around the spring. It was during the period when the rich were sacking Egypt of it antiquities & anything "Egyptian" was very popular. There are hierogliphs inscribed on the structure which says something along the lines of "drink water & you will be healthy".....i must say it didn't taste healthy ....only joking ..
Warmer today & the sun is shining at last .....
