A Handful of Dust

The expression "April is the cruellest month" comes from The Waste Land by TS Eliot, appropriate today as the spaniel and I set off for our early morning walk with snow swirling around us. It came to me as we walked along and when we got home I dug out this old copy of Evelyn Waugh's 1934 novel, the title of which also comes from The Waste Land:

"I will show you something different from either
Your shadow at morning striding behind you
Or your shadow at evening rising to meet you;
I will show you fear in a handful of dust."
