Burnt House
The spaniel and I took a road walk today to the neighbouring village of Newick which has some quite interesting older houses. Built in the early 19th century, the three storey Burnt House in Church Road has black mathematical tiles (these look like bricks but are tiles hung on a wooden frame) and a dummy window. I assume the latter was filled in to avoid paying the window tax and ready to be glazed should the tax be repealed (as it was in 1851). It seems that it never was glazed. I suspect that the painted faux window is recent.
