Life In Wales

Ynys Llanddwyn

We drove over to Ynys Mon (Angelsey) this morning and went to Newborough beach and forest.  We walked along the beach and as it was low tide we were able to walk over the the little island Ynys Llanddwyn.

The name Llanddwyn means 'The Church of St Dwynwen'.  Dwynwen is the Welsh  patron saint of lovers, making her the Welsh equivalent of St Valentine.  Her Saint's day is 25th January is often celebrated by the Welsh with cards and flowers.

We walked to the end of the island where there are 5 old pilot cottages which were for the pilots who whose job was to pilot the ships in the Menai Straits and who also manned the local lifeboat.  There is also the remains of St Dwynwen's Church, Twr Mawr Lighthouse which was built in 1845, and Twr Bach lighthouse which is thought to have been built before Twr Mawr.  Once back at Newborough, we walked through the forest back to Bertie and had mugs of soup and mince pays again :-)

Tonight my friend Yvonne came round for dinner,  it was the first time her and Alan have properly met, so it was nice to get together and we had a lovely evening.
