Lake Lure Vacation: Day 8 …
… Lake Lure, NC to Staunton, VA.
As anticipated we left a day early to head back home. As mentioned yesterday the next few days here are going to be nothing but rain so it’s probably better to head home early.
Since we didn’t have to check out by any particular time today (tomorrow is the official checkout day) we had time to leisurely pack up our things this morning. And to get a couple more bird pictures. The rain didn’t stop them from coming to get the last of the bird food we put out.
Even though it was raining we still wanted to have one last look at the lake so we stopped by on our way to check out of the resort. When we got down to the lake we were surprised to see some yellow “Do not cross” police tape up blocking the path to the lake. We saw several people out on a dock looking at the red speed boat … lower left picture. We weren’t sure what we were looking at a first but then realized that the dock they were standing on had broken free from the shore and had apparently drifted (or slammed) into another dock and this speed boat. That’s the power of last night’s rain/flooding!
My other two pictures in the collage are of the lake from our condo’s deck (lower right) and of our condo through the rain (middle right).
It was a terrible day for driving but we had to do it. Thankfully as we drove north the weather cleared and by the time we got to our hotel in Virginia it was sunny. Looking forward to a sunnier drive home tomorrow.
