Which Way Is Up?

I thought at first these tracks were made by a goose, but they could be from the heron. I have seen both recently. Either way, the bird seemed a bit confused about which direction to go. And on the right it looks to have retraced it's footprints exactly (sounds odd to say birds leave footprints).

The imprints left in the snow made an interesting design, resembling arrows pointing up and down. They reminded me of a game we played as children, leaving arrows on the pavement for others to follow.
