Epiphany walk.

Pyynikki observation tower of Tampere is one of the most wanted place to visit at any beautiful day of the year. There is a donut -cafe on the first floor of the observation tower and for sure part of all these people were going to visit there.

It was too crowded for us, so me and hubby did not leave to queue donuts, but has a good walk around the esker area.

Pyynikki esker is the largest gravel ridge in the world during the ice age. The ridge was protected as early as the 1830s, when tree cutting in the area was banned. In 1868, the restaurateur Tallqvist built the Ilomäki villa on the ridge, on which the city built a wooden lookout tower in Ilomäki in 1888. This old lookout tower was designed by architect Georg Schreck. The wooden lookout tower was damaged during the Battle of Tampere in the 1918 Civil War.

This new granite observation tower - which still stands here - was built in its place in 1929. Today the Pyynikki observation tower is one of the nationally significant built cultural environments listed by the National Board of Antiquities.
