At the World’s Edge

Having seen it discussed by Magi and rowanhagdorn we booked tickets to go to the Scottish National Portrait Gallery to see the Thomas Joshua Cooper exhibition The World’s Edge. The whole package is fascinating: the equipment he uses, the places he takes photographs and what their significance is, the decision to take just one frame which will need to be stored safely until it can be developed in his dark room. It was very stimulating indeed.

The rest of the day was financially taxing. We visited John Lewis in order to choose a fabric from which to have our new curtains made, and to make decisions about what type of poles to use. There are restrictions because of the size of the windows. After having a coffee on the fifth floor, we used the loos, and this took us through the TV department…where we chatted with someone and decided which new TV we want to get (I actually ordered it online from Curry’s PC World when we got home as JL don’t actually have it in stock…). Finally, after a trip along George Street, which somehow managed to involve a quick trip into the Seasalt shop (see extra), we had lunch at Cafe Andaluz. I was good, though, and decided not to have a glass of wine as I needed to do stuff this afternoon at home.

Somehow the day, in fact most of the weekend, has passed in a whirl of consumer therapy….I’m very grateful that we can afford to buy such nice things, which make our living environment more comfortable, although of course I constantly worry about sustainability.
