Guitar or banjo

I had the pleasure to be invited to a private impromptu performance by a local new band, not quite a rehearsal, but an informal sound checking for some of their new songs.
One of the musicians was playing this instrument, an acoustic guitar that sounds like a cross between a regular guitar and a banjo, with a folk sound. Obviously I don't know much about guitars, but I really enjoyed the concert.
