Hadrian’s Wall

Our journey home involved a detour to visit Birdoswald Roman Fort. This is one of the best preserved defences of any of the wall forts. We also took the option to walk along the longest continuous stretch of Hadrian’s Wall visible today. We followed the wall to a mile castle and Willowford Roman bridge which guarded the crossing over the River Irthing.

This is the view along the wall as we climbed out the valley. We then continued along the A69 towards Newcastle and home. An enjoyable weekend away.
