Trying to hide

Today we took D & D to Monte Alban, an archaeological site. This lizard (or gecko, not sure of the correct name) was on a rock wall, and as I approached to take a photo, he ran to this tuft of grass in an attempt to hide. As I moved closer and closer, he did not move one iota. He was about 10 inches long.
I saw another one that only had a stub for a tail, but as I believe these animals can regenerate new tails, in time he'll have another!
