Today's the day ....................... for clouds
There was an incredible mackerel sky over Castle Douglas this afternoon. Mackerel skies are so called (I think) because the pattern of cloud resembles the scales on a mackerel fish. At any rate, there are several sayings about what sort of weather will follow these sort of clouds.
For example - 'Mackerel in the sky, three days dry' or 'Mackerel sky, mackerel sky. Never long wet and never long dry'. And then there's the nautical one 'Mare's tails and mackerel scales, Make tall ships carry low sails' which means that - if they haven't already - things are going to get windy.
I'd be quite happy with the 'three days dry' one ..........................
