Better than a carriage clock

Illuminated addresses came into popular use around the 1850's. If anyone was leaving a post, or had distinguished themselves in some way, or reached a special anniversary - they would often be given one of these addresses lauding their achievements.

One famous company producing them was Marcus Ward of Belfast - and their work went to the British Royal Family, the crowned heads of Europe, the Emperor Napoleon III and the Pope.

This particular address to Mr Fleming who became an elder of North Morningside United Free Church in 1865 and had served for 50 years.

Anyone with a memory for Scottish politics will remember Lord Goold - a leading Tory politician in Scotland who died in 1997 at the age of 63. The minister who signed this address was his grandfather.
