Community library
Up until a few years ago, we were fortunate enough to have a travelling library van that covered the whole island and fulfilled a service that was far more than just providing books. However, this was not taken into account when our local authority cut the service, despite the best efforts of a group of local folk who attended council meetings and even took the fight to our MSP in the Scottish Parliament at Holyrood. Not to be beaten, a small group of volunteers set up a community library in our village hall and on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month it is library morning. Not only do we go to borrow books, we are also provided with freshly brewed coffee or tea and home baking and the opportunity to sit and chat (when covid restrictions allow). Even Bertie enjoys his visit to the library.
