Rites of Spring: Whooping cranes
Saturday 5th March
It was a gloomy day today, with very low cloud, and we had some freezing rain overnight, though fortunately not as much as they had forecast. We enjoyed a leisurely breakfast at the apartment, then went to visit the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Gallery. The museum stands on a 4-acre estate in a 1931 English Tudor style house previously owned by Alice Woodson Forester and John E. Forester. The Foresters donated their home in 1973 and the museum opened in September 1976. There is also a modern addition. The museum is best known for its annual "Birds in Art" exhibition, which exhibits contemporary artistic representations of birds, and has been held every September thru November since the museum's founding in 1976. So I can see we shall be having a return visit in September or October! There is also a sculpture garden, which unfortunately was closed, despite the paths seeming to be clear of snow and ice. The sculpture I have chosen for my blip is at the edge of the car park, and is by a Swedish/American artist, Kent Ullberg. In the afternoon we went shopping at Bed Bath and Beyond for curtain rods and curtains for Laura’s apartment, and then to pick up some things for dinner, and to bake some Almond bars - like Bakewell Tart but cut into bars. The rest of the day was spent back at the apartment, Laura and I baking and cooking, and Roger putting up the rods, and some pictures and canvas prints, so it’s looking a bit more like home.
