Small giant
I think this is Valanga irregularis, the Giant Grasshopper. I disturbed it in my garden just now. The website Brisbane Insects says it is Australia's largest grasshopper. It didn't look very big to me - about 40 mm body length. But, reading the detail, I suspect this is a nymph in the early stage of development. A mature adult could be twice that size. Insect biology is complicated.
