Breakfast
The Avocets are back and here is one that has caught its breakfast in its distinctive curved bill.
We are lucky to have them here as they are scarce Summer visitors with an estimated 1900 breeding pairs in the U.K. They are found mainly in Eastern England but with a smaller number here in the North West.
As many will know the Avocet is the logo of the Royal Society for the Protection of Bird s. It is a favourite bird for many people.
It uses its upswept bill to feed in shallow water with regular back and forward sideswipes.
