Прапор України
Today's the day ...................... to fly the flag
We took delivery of the above yesterday - and today, in company with quite a few others in Kirkcudbright, we're pleased to be flying the Ukrainian flag. We've seen a lot of it recently, of course and I thought I would find out a bit about it.
The flag of Ukraine consists of two horizontal bands of yellow and blue, the colours representing the wide blue skies and the yellow wheat fields that characterise the country. Its origins can be traced back to the 12th century. It has been used as a national flag since the 1848 Spring of Nations, when it was hoisted over Lviv Town Hall – but it was officially adopted as the state flag for the first time in 1918.
When Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union, the flag of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic was used and this flag was outlawed. The blue and yellow flag was provisionally adopted for official ceremonies in September 1991 following Ukrainian independence and it was officially restored as the country’s flag on 28 January 1992 by the Parliament of Ukraine. Ukraine has celebrated the Day of the National Flag on 23 August since 2004.
