A glimpse of days gone by

This was not chosen for its photographic qualities of course, unless you give some thought to the marvels of its age.

It is a very old photo of the rich and famous travelling on the Monte Railway. This railway was started in 1891 and finally ceased operation in 1943.

Looking at the well dressed gentry, they must have been seriously overheated, even in those days.

My extra is the photo of the list of hotels in the new Museum of the Monte Railway. This was started in 1891 and thrived, carrying tourists and locals high up to Monte, until it ceased operation in  1943.

Reid’s was top of the list of course, with no prices quoted.

Next was The Savoy, with “En pension daily terms from 15/-. “

If you happen to be passing, this lovely little museum is fascinating.

But then, there’s so much to do on this wonderful island.
