Peover and the D-Day Landing
A quiet morning on the campsite, and for the first time not having to uproot the van and drive anywhere as my old schoolfriend Chris was driving over from Urmston. We were to go on the same walk we did last time we were here - across the fields and by the Peover Eye (Stream, little river) to the pub we ate lunch at - The Bells of Peover. And it was beatifully sunny if not very warm. Chris arrived and we chatted about so many things, books we have been reading, the current situation in Ukraine and personal journeys. Great time, and a big lunch - the 45 minute walk back was very welcome.
So why D-Day Landings - well when we were at lunch we noticed that this pub in the middle of the Cheshire countryside was sporting a US flag - not something we would expect to see in Peover - and that's pronounced Peever not Pee Over!! Well it turns out that Generals Eisenhower and Patton met for lunch at this pub to discuss the D-Day Landings and so they celebrate their involvement in the war effort with the 2 flags. History can be so interesting and the most unassuming places can have played a part albeit small in significant parts of it! Anyway, the walk back was probably needed - I think after the 3 course meal we consumed we might just as well have rolled back. Nicky, my sister turned up when we got back with our dry washing and we all had a cup of tea - last time Nicky saw Chris was when I was 18 in the Netherlands! Another good day in paradise.
