Fine detail

I have not taken any other photos I thought some people might like to see the print that Gordon bought at Farfield Mill. It is not like him to make a purchase on the spur of the moment, but I knew when I saw the work of Stuart Wilkie that it was just the kind of thing he likes and I had a feeling he would buy one.

The detail obtained by using wood engraving is quite amazing. It is the printing technique first perfected by Thomas Bewick in his remarkable bird prints. Apparently finding the right kind of hard wood with a smooth surface is quite difficult, then specialist tools are used to obtain the fine lines before the whole surface is inked. This was the stage that we watched a few days ago and which fascinated us all, including the granddaughters. I have added a photo of us watching the inking process in extras.
