Atlantic Road

Is it a ski jump?
Or are we following in the footsteps of James Bond in “No Time to Die”?

This is one of the eight bridges along the Atlantic Road, an 8 kilometre-long coastal route linking several islands and islets and built in 1989 to improve communications for the people living in this area. However, it has now become an exceptionally popular tourist route and there are many parking areas along the way where folk can stop and enjoy the view. The first extra shows that the main photo is indeed a bridge and not a ski jump.

Earlier in this expedition we stopped at a stave church (Third extra). This particular one dates back to the 16th century, and like all stave churches it is built completely of wood and supported by enormous tree trunks inside and slightly thinner lengths of wood acting as buttresses outside.

Immediately before we started on the Atlantic Road, we enjoyed a traditional meal of bacalao, a tasty fish stew made from dried, salted cod. The second extra shows the restaurant owner showing us an example of this fish which is a very common food throughout Norway and which has been exported to other European countries for several hundred years!

This evening expedition provided a very enjoyable end to the final full day of our voyage of discovery.
