Asparagus!
There are very few things on the plot that bring joy and excitement like spotting the first asparagus tips poking through the soil. If you're like me, the reaction is often screaming "Yaaaay!!!" while jumping around the asparagus bed. Happy days!
I've been inspecting the asparagus beds daily for about 2 weeks so it's a delight to know the day when I proudly bring the first bunch of homegrown asparagus home for a meal is near.
I have 30 crowns of green and purple asparagus on the plot, most crowns are 5 years old and 6 crowns are 2 years old. I treat this crop like royalty - I don't let a single weed grow, they enjoy a 10cm mulch of manure and compost in the autumn, another one in the spring, plus lots of watering and feeding in the summer.
The harvest is looking promising. That's if I manage to keep the muntjac deers away from these precious beds...
