Easter Eggs

I had an early morning visit to the RSPB’s Morecambe Bay reserve, which is close to the main Leighton Moss reserve.

The reserve is a cacophony of noise, as there is a large black headed gull colony here. The noise does not put the avocets off - indeed, they provide protection from larger predatory gulls which would take eggs and chicks. If those come close the black headed hills rise up to see them off.

One of the avocets here is inspecting its nest, which is occupied by four large - and very well camouflaged - eggs. An amazing physical feat for one bird to produce these relative whoppers.
