Out of Place
This replica of Michelangelo's Pieta graces the top of the stairs on the sixth floor of the Museum of the Bible. It is placed in such a way that the US Capitol Building is seen through the window behind it. It seems to be a dichotomy of love of law and law of love. I wonder if the placement is intentional.
I saw the original sculpture at the New York World's Fair in 1964. I still remember the blue velvet backdrop and elegant lighting. There was a moving sidewalk (like the people movers at the airport) that carried people across the view of the statue. It was a really exciting new invention back then.
My grandson has been begging to go back to the Museum of the Bible. (It is so incredibly interactive.) Since he is on school break, I was able to make it happen today. We did the Washington Revelations. It is a six-minute tour that is like an amusement park ride. It was incredible! It felt like we were flying!
