Amandine's Plot Treize

By AmandineJardine

Beneficial insects and cabbage whitefly

When I grow broccoli, the main pest I think about is pigeons but I never take measures to keep whitefly off the plants. I just accept them (to an extent...) and soak the broccoli in salty water before eating them.

This year's not been an easy year with whitefly and 2 of my plants are severely affected, to the point it's ruined some of the harvest. I was about to pull them out when I noticed a ladybird feasting on the cabbage whitefly.

I've now decided to remove all the netting (it's nearly the end of the harvest anyway) to see what happens.

I never use pesticides in my back garden and on the plot so my only option is to control pests organically with companion planting, biological solutions like nematodes or beneficial insects like these ladybirds. You have to be more relaxed about it and can't expect a quick fix but it's nice to know the food I grow is completely organic.

And next year I'll plant strong smelling plants like lemon balm or thyme to try and deter the cabbage whitefly!
