Bell canyon trail
Tuesday
A mix of weather today, with a wintry mix of showers from time to time. There was a fresh dusting of snow on the foothills that you can see from Jen and Jason’s house, and there were several brief snow flurries while we were having breakfast - some of Jason’s home made croissants straight from the oven! We headed south of Salt Lake City this morning for our hiking, Bell Canyon trail near the town of Sandy. This was a new trail for us, and a while since Jen had done it. Our destination was a waterfall, and the path climbed along the stream for much of the way. However, having put on some weight over the last couple of years, and not being in quite such good shape, together with the elevation - about 5,000ft, I found it quite taxing going up, and so Roger and I didn’t make it all the way to the end, since Roger too wasn’t wanting to push his knee too far on the first day. So we left Jen to finish it off. At the point we turned around, we were beginning to get up to the snow line, and it was starting to snow again, and from what Jen told us, I think we made the right decision. We still did over 4 miles return, with over 1000 ft elevation gain. We don’t have much chance to do climbs like that back in Ohio, since the highest point is only 1549 ft! We stopped for a bowl of soup at a soup and sandwich place on the way back, and took it easy for the rest of the day, and enjoyed a game of Scrabble in the evening.
