Nortonthorpe Mill...

...Scissett...

...on the way back from Pilates this morning - I feel better for a good stretch!

A fine example of a traditional Yorkshire mill – described as “fancy manufacturers, making shawls, mantle covers etc”

In 1801 Norton started the mill in Scissett. By 1827 it gave work to 638 handloom weavers from Stocksmoor to Kirkburton.

It still has the original 1885 Pollitt and Wigzell steam engine – the only known surviving working example of a long stroke engine. The mill pond would have powered the engine.
( I’ll blip the engine house another time! )

The mill is now a thriving industrial park with retail, offices, storage and industrial units.
