'Home' grown mushrooms at The Shambles Market
I went out to get some fresh air after eating a snack lunch whilst running my market stall. Woodpeckers and I always have stalls indoors in the church hall, but there is also the original market in the outdoor area of 'The Shambles', a former meeting place outside the 16th century Old Town Hall and next to St Laurence church. The church was built in the 14th century although only the elegant tower and spire survived a Victorian rebuild.
New market traders are now offered sites closer to the church where they can try selling their products. today I noticed a stall selling punnets of fresh fungi as well as some dried specialist mushrooms such as porcini, my favourite.
I asked the stall holder if I could take some pictures and he told me the background to his business. He grows this range of fungi in various building in Somerset where he hails from. It seems it is worth coming all the way to Stroud, and other markets to sell. It seems to be working as this is all he had left today. I wish him well and look forward to his return which he says he hopes to do regularly.
