Smithfield

It was an exciting weekend, but I'm glad to have a quiet day today! We can see the roof of Smithfield Market from our flat so I went to have a look at progress. This is the old General Market which will become the heart of the new Museum of London in about 3 years' time. The scaffolding is over the central hall which is a huge open area supported by Victorian wrought iron columns. The future of the Market hung in the balance for decades and at the end it was the uniqueness of this open market area that persuaded the planners to block the plans to demolish it. It will make a spectacular museum.
