I'm feeling a little faint and queasy
so I have chosen this stained glass from the church in Chilham, Kent, which I visited nine days ago, rather than use the more optimistic shots I bagged today.
Last night I was becoming a little concerned that I still hadn't received any written confirmation of the job I had been offered only verbally last week – the offer which had provided me with the security/confidence to resign from my current job and also from my tenancy in Henley.
This morning I received a reassuring call from the recruitment agent who acts as go-between, telling me that he had received, and forwarded on to me, the contract of employment for me to sign.
Perfect timing! I didn't want to sign a contract too soon because I want to allow the preferred employer enough time to make me an offer, but neither did I want to create a noticeable delay at my end with the job-on-offer.
The preferred employer had said they should have reached a decision by tomorrow, so in theory, I have a wonderful target to aim for, but also a safe fall-back position.
What a luxurious situation to be in!
I had imagined I would begin blipping the countdown of days I have yet to endure in my current job, but when I arrived back at my flat and accessed my personal emails, including the contract of employment from prospective new employers awaiting my signature, I realised straight away I will never in my lifetime sign it.
It expects:
1- a six month probation period, during which employment can be terminated by employer with one week's notice. Employer can also extend probation period by a further three months.
2- a 40 hour week with additional hours unpaid at employer's discretion/demand.
3- of 24 days annual leave (not including National holidays), five MUST be taken during the construction industry's annual Xmas break.
I think I need to remain calm for the next 24 hours, and if I've heard nothing either way from my preferred employer, give their HR dept. a gentle nudge before adding my own edits to the exploitative contract and returning it for discussion with exploitative potential employer.
