The Leith Police dismisseth us ….

Well, not exactly the police but the Leith High Constables who undertake ceremonial duties for civic authorities and the monarchy in Edinburgh.

After another full day discussing amongst other things the reform of the church and an apology for the church's role in witchcraft persecution I went to Holyrood Palace.  There was the ceremony of Beating the retreat by the pipes and bands and dancers from nearby  CCFs and schools – see extra.  This was followed by a reception in the Great Hall of the Palace for first time Commissioners to the General Assembly.  It was hosted by the Lord High Commissioner, this year the Rt Hon Lord Hodge, Deputy President of the UK Supreme Court.  Before turning to the law he was a colleague trainee in the Scottish Government - a couple of years ahead of me.  How things have changed:  one is meant to address him in this role as “Your Grace!”
